Detroit Startup Week: FREE Professional Development Events

Startup Week™ is a free, five-day celebration of our community that builds momentum and opportunity around entrepreneurship. The event is led by local entrepreneurs and is FREE to those who register. This years event in Detroit starts today and is taking place at the historic Masonic Temple in Downtown Detroit. The 5 day event includes information sessions on technology, entrepreneurship 101, mobility, music, the business of food, financial tech, women entrepreneurship, and more. Detroit Startup Week™ will also host a pitch competition, FREE headshots, launch of the Startup Next Detroit 2.0 “pre-accelerator” and legal advice for startups.

Detroit Startup Week™ is hosted by Techstars and the main sponsor is J.P. Morgan Chase. Detroit QLine: FREE Rides this Weekend!

Take a FREE ride on Detroit’s new Qline this weekend! Streetcar service begins today, 05/12/17, and will remain FREE throughout the weekend. Other events are scheduled as part of the opening this weekend with businesses and cultural institutions along the line’s Woodward Avenue route will have discounts, specials and events Friday through Sunday.

Some of the specials include:

  • FREE first Aid Kits until 5 pm today or while supplies last at the Martin Luther King Blvd/Mack Avenue Station
  • FREE gift sponsored by Compuware at the Canfield station on Saturday starting at 11 am and while supplies last

HopCat: FREE Crack Fries for Mother’s Day!

On Sunday, 05/14/17, HopCat is giving away Crack Fries to all moms as a way to say thank you on Mother’s Day! All mom has to do is make any other purchase to receive the FREE fries. Currently, there are five HopCat locations in Michigan: Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, East Lansing, Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Food Network Magazine has ranked HopCat’s Crack Fries as one of the top 10 fries in the U.S. They are beer-battered and sprinkled with black pepper seasoning. They are served with a side of warm cheese sauce for dipping. Yum!!

Free Comic Book Day {05/06/17}

On Saturday, 05/06/17, pick up a FREE comic or graphic novel at these metro Detroit comics specialty shops in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

Every year on the first Saturday in May (in 2017, that’s May 6), comic book specialty shops give out FREE comic books to anyone who drops in! Chicken Shack: $1.45 Throwback Lunch!

Michigan Science Center: FREE Admission on 12/26

On Saturday, 12/26/15, you can get FREE general admission to the Michigan Science Center sponsored by MGM Grand! Enjoy FREE general admission all day (10a-6p), including 250+ hands-on exhibits, live stage shows, lab activities, their special exhibit of a T-Rex Named Sue and more!

The Henry Ford: $5 Day on 11/07/15

The Henry Ford is offering $5 admission to Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, Ford Rouge Factory Tour or a traditional IMAX® movie on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The $5 admission is made possible by the Ford Foundation Arts Access program. Visitors can also choose to purchase two venues for $10 or three for $15.

The one day only event is in recognition of the historic decision by Henry Ford to offer workers a wage of $5 per day in 1914 which played a major role in building America’s middle class. Learn more about the $5 work day at: The Rise of the Middle Class.

HopCap Detroit: Grand Opening Celebration {12/13/14}

HopCap Detroit will celebrate it’s Grand Opening on Saturday, 12/13/14 with a FREE concert by Brooklyn-based Pitch Blak Brass Band and Detroit’s own Howling Diablos at night and FREE Crack Fries all day! They’ll also give out cards good for a FREE order of Crack Fries every week for a year to the first 200 people (ages 21 and older) to enter! HopCap is located at 4265 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. An Ann Arbor location is scheduled to open in January 2015 downtown in the former Borders building.

Detroit Tigers Opening Day Open House at UM Detroit Center

“Spring to the D” this Monday for Detroit Tigers ‪#‎OpeningDay on Monday, 03/31/14! Plus, attend the University of Michigan Detroit Center‘s 4th Annual Open House for FREE admission, parking and ballpark theme refreshments! The U-M Detroit Center will host its fourth annual Opening Day Open House from 10 am to 4 pm with with ballpark=style food and beverages served from noon to 1 pm. Fun door prizes will also be available for a few lucky visitors.

In addition to a day of festive activities, the MDetroit Center Connector (MDCC) bus service will provide UM students, facility, staff and their guests’ transportation between Ann Arbor and Detroit. To learn more about the bus schedule and pick-up locations, visit detroitcenter.umich.edu/mdcc.

Detroit Metro Parent: FREE Camp Expo + Admission to the Michigan Science Center {03/02/14}

Detroit Metro Parent is hosting a FREE Camp Expo featuring 40 camps in Southeast Michigan on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at the Michigan Science Center from noon to 3:30 pm. At the Expo, you’ll have the change to meet face-to-face with camp directors from a variety of different camps and summer programs for kids of all ages – preschoolers through teens. Take your kids for hands on fun courtesy of the exhibiting camps and then enjoy a FREE day of exploration at the Michigan Science CenterRegister to attend Camp Expo AND attend the event and you could win $500 toward summer tuition at the exhibiting camp of your choice.

I’ve attended the Camp Expo many times in the past and honestly one of the best parts is getting into the hosting venue for FREE! It’s been at the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA) in the past as well as the Cranbrook Institute of Arts. We’re really excited to get to chance to explore the Michigan Science Center for FREE after the Expo as admission is usually $13 for adults and $10 for children (ages 2-12). The Michigan Science Center is located at 5020 John R St. in Detroit.
