If you get broadband Internet access through your cable company, one way to trim the cost is to avoid the modem rental fee – typically about $7 per month, or $84 per year. So today’s tip of the day:
Don’t rent if it makes more sense to buy.
Most cable companies won’t tell you that you can purchase your own modem. Plus, if the cable company really wants your business, they might even throw the modem in for FREE, give you a rebate, or offer to pay the first few months of the rental fee. You can also purchase your own modem – from eBay, Amazon or at an electronics store such as Best Buy – for the cost of a year’s worth of fees. Just make sure that you check with your cable provider to make sure that the modem you purchase is compatible with your service!
